In the 19th century Detrichovice (Dittersdorf am Kirchberg) was a part of Jagerndorf (Krnov).
I was interested to study the Ludwig family who lived in these two regions of the nowaday
Czech republic, close to the border with Poland, in the former Austrian Silezia (catholic).
There were a lot of Ludwig families living in Freudenthal (Bruntal) county.
There were only a few Ludwig families living in Jaegerndorf (Krnow) county.
I looked for the Ludwig names from the beginning of the church records until mid of the 19th
century. My Ludwigs left the region before 1848. They moved to New Arad, Banat, Romania
and later to Kronstadt (Brasso, Brasov), Romania.
He had a brother Franz born in Dittersdorf am Kirchberg, Freudenthal (Bruntal, Czech republic).
Franz married with Magdalena Hummel in Hermannstadt (Sibiu), Romania.
I studied the church records at the national archives and I found that Franz was born in Dittersdorf,
Austrian Silezia. This information helped me because I thought Ludwig was from Engelsberg.
I studied all the villages around Engelsberg but never Dittersdorf.
After I got the information from Sibiu I studied the church records from Detrichovice and finally
I found my Ludwig family.
Ludwigs were Strumpfwirkers - knitwear (socks) manufacturers.
They are mentioned in the Engelsberg (Andelska Hora) Strumpfwirkers guild book.
Franz Ludwig, father of Franz, Julianna, Theresia, Leopold, Joseph.
Franz Ludwig, father of Franz, Julianna, Theresia, Leopold, Joseph.
According to the church records from New Arad they lived there at least 5 years.
Leopold's sister Julianna, born in Dittersdorf in 1819, died in New Arad in 1825.
Another sister, Theresia, was born in December 1821 in Dittersdorf.
This means that Ludwigs moved to New Arad about 1822. Leopold was born in 1824 and his
brother Joseph was born in New Arad in 1826.
Both brothers born in New Arad had the same Godfather, Leopold Hermann, "arcularius".
He was a manufacturer of small wood boxes (dowry ?) and cassettes, probably for jewellery.
After 1848 my Ludwigs are living in Kronstadt (Brasso, Brasov), Siebenbuergen, Romania.
I studied a lot of church records from Detrichovice Czech republic, Arad, Sibiu, Brasov Romania.
Some days ago I found the Hungarian land census from 1828. There were no Ludwigs there but
I found the Godfather Leopold Hermann and other Hermanns.
According to the New Arad History, the settlers were from Alsace and Lorraine, at the French-German border, a subject of permanent conflict between these two countries.
I think that Ludwigs were also from that French-German border region, but they left that region
a long time ago, before the New Arad settlers. All were catholic.
In December 2014 I met in Detrichovice the catholic priest and a family who started to repair
the church. I told them that my ancestors are linked to the house number 61 which has now the
number 3. It was the house of Johann Christoph Ludwig. Ludwigs sold the house about 1820.
I am very curious to look under the roof of this house to find if the name Ludwig is carved on
a beam. The family I met there asked the people living in this house but they were suspicious.
Dittersdorf 61 - now Detrichovice 3
Johann Christoph Ludwig is mentioned in the document find under the roof of the church:
